Red Wolf's biography
Common name: Red wolf
Scientific name: Canis rufus
Type: Mammals
Diet: carnivore
Size: 4 feet approximately
Status: Critically endangered
Current population trend: Decreasing
The red wolf is the most endangered member of the dog family. Native to the United States, their size is between that of grey wolves and coyotes. The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern North Carolina is the only place where they still are in the wild, with only 35 or fewer left. Like all wolves, red wolves form packs and are highly social. Each pack consists of 1 breeding pair and their offspring, giving a total of 5-8 individuals.
They are endangered because, like other wolves, they were hunted aggressively in the 19th and early 20th century. Apart from this, gunshot wounds have been the leading cause of death. In 1980, they were declared extinct in the wild. However, captive breeding helped revive their numbers. You can help these animals by spreading awareness and working towards the overall improvement of the climate.
